History of the Society of Foundation Professors
For over 100 years Eastern has provided educational quality with the dedication of well-trained and motivated teachers.
Since 1906, Eastern faculty have been expected to balance teaching, service, and research. As the university matured, its faculty and administration explored ways to recognize excellence. Quality teaching became one of the major thrusts during the tenure of President Hanly Funderburk.
In 1987 the Eastern Kentucky University Foundation found one way to encourage and reward outstanding teaching by creating Foundation Professorships. The number of honorees has varied from one to as many as four. Each recipient receives an annual stipend and is expected to provide leadership in improving instruction at EKU.
